Definition of terms
The game
It is preferred that the competition will consist of four man teams. However, depending on interest shown, it may be changed to pairs. Participants will be advised of the final decision in early September.
FOURS - A Fours Game shall be contested by eight players, four players on each side, LEAD, SECOND, THIRD and SKIP. Each player shall bowl two bowls, bowling alternately. The LEAD shall bowl first, followed by the SECOND, the THIRD and the SKIP in that order.
PAIRS/DOUBLES - A Pairs Game shall be contested by four players, two on each side, a LEAD and a SKIP. Each player shall bowl four bowls, bowling alternately. The LEADS shall bowl their four bowls to be followed by the SKIPS.
Bowling the jack
The jack must be rolled from within the side boundaries of the delivery area. The player delivering the jack must have at least part of one foot within and on the footer area. A jack thrown is an improper roll and will be re-rolled by the opponent.
If the jack, when bowled, runs off the carpet at the ends or the sides, or if no part of it reaches the line 20 feet from the delivering end of the carpet, it shall be sent back for he opponent to bowl it. After each LEAD has had one unsatisfactory throw, the jack shall be placed on the 24-foot mark from the delivery end of the carpet.
The opponent’s throw of the jack shall not affect the order of playing the bowls.
If the jack, when bowled, comes to rest on the carpet between the line 20-feet from the delivery end and the front of the delivery rectangle at the jack end, it shall be placed at the centre of the carpet at a point opposite that at which it came to rest.
If the jack when bowled comes to rest on the carpet at a point farther from the delivery end than the front line of the delivery rectangle at the jack end, it shall be centered at the front of the delivery rectangle.
Delivering the bowl
At the moment of delivery, a player must have at least part of one foot or knee within the footer area. No portion of either foot or knee may be on or over any portion of the carpet, except the footer area. Due allowance is to be made for players with physical disabilities.
A bowl is considered delivered if it leaves the hand of the player and passes outside the delivery rectangle.
At the moment of releasing a bowl, a player must have the hand delivering the bowl within the boundaries of the delivery area. The bowl need not contact the carpet before passing outside the delivery area. The bowl must pass wholly over the front line of the delivery rectangle, and must not cross a sideline of the delivery rectangle.
If a player accidentally drops a bowl, which then passes outside the delivery rectangle, it will not be considered as delivered. Due allowance is to be made for players with physical disabilities.
A player shall not follow the bowl up the carpet or up the side of the carpet.
A bowl which comes to rest less than 10 feet from the delivery end of the carpet, or while in course, or through subsequent play, comes to rest wholly outside the carpet or partly on the carpet but touching the floor, shall be dead and removed.
If a bowl leaves the carpet and returns to the carpet, and in doing so, touches any part of the head, the opposing DIRECTOR shall decide whether the head shall remain as disturbed, or replace the head by agreement, or whether the end will be dead.
After all the bowls have been played and come to rest, the THIRDS shall decide the results:
If measuring is necessary the team which delivered the last bowl shall conduct the first measure. The opposing THIRD, if not satisfied, may then measure. In the case of a Championship, the UMPIRE will do the measuring.
The team that won the previous end will deliver the jack and first bowl in the succeeding end.
Where the end is tied, the team that delivered the first bowl that end will continue to deliver the jack and first bowl in the succeeding end.
One "Shot Point" is allowed for each bowl nearer the jack than the nearest bowl of the opponent. If the nearest opposing bowls are equidistant from the jack, the end is a tie and no score is recorded, although it shall count as an end. If, before the shot point(s) are determined, a bowl should fall over, its new position shall be one from which it is measured. If the measurer disturbs the bowl or the jack, then, if the two disputed bowls are being measured for first shot, the result shall be a tie. If the two disputed bowls are being measured for a shot point other than the first shot point, then only those shot points already agreed upon shall score.
Depending on the number of teams entered, a single or a double round robin will be played.
